Camera editing task

(01/10/15)

In today's lesson the task was to edit a short clip we had created in groups and then we learnt how to edit our video using Movie Plus editing software. We learnt how to make the clips smaller and quicker, also how to connect scenes together to make them look like they are the same shot, this is known as 'editing'. We took out the parts that were not needed at the beginning or end of the clip to make the scene look natural. This made the clip seem smoother and more connected, making it easier to follow.

Preliminary Task

This is my Preliminary task which is part of my Media Studies coursework. This was completed with my group which consisted of myself, Gwion and Tom. We used a variety of camera shots and angles to try and experience what the different camera angles and shot can do to effect the audience. I think the task went quite well and after looking at our finished clip we now know what we did well and what we can do next time in order to improve. We now also know how to edit a clip to make it look much more smooth and clear to explain what is going on to the audience. I think we worked well as a team but need to use our time much more wisely in order to finish in the allotted time we have. Also, I think we need to plan more beforehand. Below is our finished clip.

Proudction Pitch

(3/12/15)
In today's lesson each group in my media class presented their ideeas for our opening sequence to our main task films. My groups film is a spy, intelligence, action thriller styled film. It is about the British  intelligence at war with foreign excellences. Our opening sequence will open with an agent getting dressed and ready in the morning and then proceeding to a location where he is going to spy on two oversea agents. He is then caught and followed by the two agents. The britsih agent is confronted by the oversea agents where every person in the scene is holding a gun. The screen then goes black and a soundtrack of a gunshot plays. After this sound effect the title of the film will appear on the screen (the title is not certain yet). After our presentaion other groups from our class asked questions about our opening sequence, these questions were regarding about what location and actors we are going to use in our film. The location is hopefully going to be set it Yarnton Village quarry and railway bridge. The actors for our film have not been fully confirmed yet as we want to get the right people.

Foundation portfolio - Main task brief

(17/11/15)

Looking at the main task brief I understand what is expected when I produce my opening sequence. For example, soundtracks and opening titles will make my clip look much more proffesional and realistic. Also, my group and I will need to leave the opening clip on a cliff-hanger in order to leave the audience wanting more, this will make my film succesful. But before we even start filming the clip, my group and I will need to carry out research on:

  • Setting - where we are filming the clip (not just picking the easy option and thinking which will look best in our film.)
  • Genre - what type of film it is going to be (comedy, horror, romance etc.)
  • Costumes
  • Props
  • Dialouge - writing up a script.
  • Soundtracks - what music is going to be used during the clip.
  • Deciding which person is going to do for the film - Director, camera man/women, actors etc.
  • Editing - After thefilming has been completed my group and I need to connect the clips together into one, this will make the film stick together. Bits that are not needed will be edited out, and special effects can be used (such as slow motion). This is also where opening titles can be inserted and soundtracks put in.
  • Camera - movement, angles, shots (panning, over the shoulder shot etc.)
For the clip to be realistic and nautral looking my group needs to consider these key points, and planin advance so we are prepared on filming day and in the editing suite afterwards.

Analysis of film clip

(24/09/15)

In today's lesson we watched a clip from the film L.A. Confidential. We watched this clip in order to understand the many different camera angles and camera shots used. In this clip it shows a pair of police officers interrogating a bad lawyer. Using the camera shots in this film helped build to the main action of the police officers hanging the lawyer out of the window in order for him to confess. But the first camera shot used is a continuous shot where the audience follows the police officers into the lawyers into his office. This is to suggest to the audience that the scene is quite slow paced at this point and as we are following the police officers we are on their side, not the lawyers. When the police officers are talking to the lawyer the camera keep shooting back from one police officers face to the other. This is to show to the audience the conversation is getting a faster pace and so we can see the reactions on each of the police officers face. The audience then understands what emotion the characters are feeling. With the different editing and camera shots the audience gets the impression of who the 'good people' are and who the 'bad people' are, and which side they are rooting for quickly. Without the different editing and camera shots, the film would be boring and not interesting.

Examples of Editing

(24/09/15)

In today's lesson we watched a clip from 'Shaun of the dead' in order to understand how the different types of editing can change a film and how much more developed the film is with editing. While watching the clip the we detected the different types of edits and different cuts that were used. This is showing us that from the early 1900's to now how much filming has developed from one massive take to having around 100 minutes in a short segment. In the 'Shaun of the dead' clip it shows a wide range of camera shots including shots such as the 'reverse angle shot' which showed 'Shaun' looking in the mirror than his landlord being shown in the mirror in a different edit. With only 'one take' this wouldn't of been achieved. That's why filming is so much more developed.

History of Editing

(24/09/15)

In today's lesson we learnt about the history of editing and how much has changed from now and when the first ever film was produced in the 1890's. When the first films were created, there was no such thing as 'editing' or 'movement'. there use to be one camera that took one long big shot to film the entire scene, there was no editing the scene or movement of camera to give the effect of camera angles and shots.
But when a man called George Melies was filming a bus his camera died, when his camera restarted a Hurst was in the same position the bus had been. Melies called this a 'jump cut', as the scene changed from the bus to the hurst in one take. Melies also created the 'fade in and out', 'overlapping dissolves' and stop motion photography. But when filming all of his films he never moved the camera once, so his films had no actually camera movement. Compared to today's filming their is a large wide verity of camera shots and camera angles that can be used. Also there is a lot of camera movement used in today's filming.

Analysing a clip from TV

(21/09/15)

In today's lesson our task was to listen to a soundtrack from a TV programme, in order to show what we could guess was going on in the programme without actually watching it. This helped me visualise what was going on and I managed to pick out key features from the clip in order to guess what was going on.

We also watched a clip from 'Doctor Who' and analysed how gender was represented through props, lighting, expressions, appearance and setting. This activity helped me understand how gender is represented to show power or authority (the stereotype being that men overpower women).
(10/09/15)

In today's lesson I learnt about different types of camera shots and angles, and why directors use most of them in their films to create different reactions from the audience.
We looked at a clip from the 2006 "Superman Returns" directed by Bryon Singer. To get a better understanding of what common shots are used we had to analyse the clip and pick out what camera angles were used and why they effect the audience. In the scene I found certain camera angles such as:
  • Eye level shot - This was used to show the power Superman has and how a bullet to the eye doesn't effect him.
  • Low angle shot - to show the power and authority superman has over the 'bad guy' who is trying to kill and harm lots of police officers.
  • Big close up - to show the reaction on Supermans face, it tells the audience what emotion superman is feeling.
Without certain camera angles, the audience wouldn't be as entertained as the screen would just remain the same. Camera angles allow the audience to get a clearer understanding of the characters and what is going on during the film.

(03/09/15)

From today's Media lesson I learnt and understand that I need to create a blog after every lesson in order to show my progress over the upcoming weeks. I also got a better understanding of what Media Studies involves and what I personally need to do in order to get a good grade. I now know what I am expected to study over the next year is my AS course.
